I recently made two batches of your black lentil recipe with good feedback from the family, so I'm looking forward to giving another of your recipes ago. So I've been to the local Indian grocer and armed myself with most of these ingredients (boy are they 'aromatic' - our pantry smells like an Indian restaurant without cooking a thing). One question before I start, the only pomegranate seeds available were in powder form. I'm guessing I wouldn't need 1/4c of it - how much would you suggest I use instead?
many thanks,
Lucila

I've had a green smoothie every morning for the last 3 years. I add hemp protien powder ,flax seed and sometimes wheat grass powder. Kale, spinach, romaine, frozen banana, frozen pineapple and an inch of fresh ginger is a tasty and healthy way to start the day. :)

Sounds like you're having a great trip!

I have a question, when you have a little time... I want to make the Amla Chickpea recipe in your book. It calls for 10-15 pieces of whole dried amla. But the Indian grocer I went to didn't have dried, only frozen! And they're very large, and not many in a package... I'm just wondering how the fresh/frozen translates over to the dried... Thanks. :)

These recipes are a great start to a new year. I am working my way through your first book and I am really enjoying the journey. Every time I use my slow cooker, I think the recipe will not work, but I have been proven wrong every time. There is nothing like coming home with a healthy Indian meal in the slow cooker. I am very fortunate to have a nice Indian market in my neighborhood in San Diego. I love going there with your book and selecting the proper spices and lentils or beans. Although I have been blessed with good health, I am watching my cholesterol and blood sugar and the healthy Indian diet and my slow cooker will be a big help. I am also watching my food budget and the Indian diet is very budget conscious. It is probably not too late to say thanks and wish everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2012. I just added mustard greens to my shopping list.

Amla turned out to be tricky to find in the Chicago suburbs. The only place I found it had a candied version (which I figured was not what I needed) and two varieties of salted, one of which also had lemon juice -- that's the one I bought.

The chickpeas with amla calls for 10-15 whole. These appeared to be chopped up, an I thought possibly chopped in half, but they turned out to be quarters and smaller (it was hard to tell until they were fully hydrated during cooking). If you revise the cookbook, I'd like to request you put weights or volumes on ingredients like this, rather than "10-15" -- I probably used half of what I was supposed to, but it was still delicious.

For that matter, weights/volumes on items such as tomatoes and onions rather than "half a medium onion sliced" is one of my recipe pet peeves: How big is a medium onion anyway? (Even worse is grated parmesan cheese -- how much is a half-cup of grated cheese? It depends on your grater -- it could be a half-ounce of microplane snow, or three ounces of box grater shreds)

Loving everything I've cooked from the book so far (Rajmah, the amla chickpeas, and the nihari -- several times).

Hiya! I'm very excited to start using your cookbook, and am trying to locate the spices I'll need. Did you say that you sell spices online? If so, I can't seem to find a link, besides to the Tiffin itself. (I live in a tiny town, and am still trying to find an Indian grocery that isn't 3+ hours away.) Thanks. :)

Hi, Anupy! Thanks for the wonderful dishes you shared with me last week. The day after I picked them up, my husband warmed up some nan from Trader Joe's (hope that's not a heresy!) and we feasted. I don't know the names of the dishes, so I'll describe them.

First up were the black lentils with rice. This was a spicy dish that we enjoyed a great deal. Second was a dish with yellow lentils (or split peas?) and split chickpeas with tomatoes. We also liked the seasoning of this dish very much. Third was a recipe for white lima beans. The flavors of this dish were more subtle, so it resonated a little less with us, but I liked it as well. Of the three, I'd say the middle dish was our favorite. That is one I definitely would try making!

I might be too late -- I've been woefully neglectful when it comes to checking your blog! I don't live near you, but I do live near your mother. We met when you spoke at the Upper Merion library last year. My children were with me and they LOVED your demo food (especially my younger son!). Since then, I've been working my way through your first book and loving every single meal! In fact, I'm making Chana Masala right now!

If you're ever back home and looking to taste test, let me know -- we'd be happy to help out! Good luck with the new book! I can't wait to get it and work my way through it!

Definitely want to try these! Just made your spicy butternut squash recipe from your cookbook and my daughter and I both loved it. Thanks so much! I accidentally grew butternut squash this year (mislabeled pumpkins) so have LOTS to use up! I didn't have any fenugreek seeds so just omitted them and it was still good, but I really want to try it again once I find some.

That is great idea. I will try and let you know.
Also try soaking overnight and sprouting for 10-12 hours and do the baking part and skip the cook part!

A very delayed review of the mulligatawny!!

This was a nice spicy soup that I enjoyed. I really liked the slight kick that hits you a little after the flavor, and warms you inside (nice on these chilly/rainy days). The soup itself was thin...I think maybe it's usually made with cream or some type of dairy product, but I didn't really miss that. There were tiny "chunks" (chunk implies bigger pieces than they were) of pepper and ginger (perhaps) that were a little offputting, texture-wise, since the soup was so thin, but that was probably the only negative for me. The seitan was nice to have in there as something chewy and filling.

I was lucky enough to sample a piece of chicken with a spice rub on it that was really flavorful and made the chicken so much more alive than the boring chicken I usually make.

More bonuses were fresh roti (yum! I need to try my hand at making those...it seems so easy!) and some spiced/roasted chickpeas that I didn't get too creative with - mostly just snacking on them after a little reheating. I've made something similar, and I think they are a great snack.

I did use the suggestion to put sambhar powder on my popcorn (I'm partial to kettle corn) and now I don't think I want it any other way! I loved the little bit of heat that I got, combined with the sweetness of the kettle corn.
