SEVA: Sev-A-Restaurant

“Seva” is a Sanskrit word meaning “selfless service” or work performed without any thought of reward or repayment. It seemed a perfect theme for this project.

Neha Singla

Covid-19 has affected all of us in some way, making it difficult to feed our families and run our businesses. Small restauranteurs and grocery store owners are finding it harder and harder to keep their businesses going during lockdown and beyond, fearing that they may not survive and lose businesses that have been passed down through the generations.

My name is Neha. If you are on this website, you must know my mom Anupy. If there's one thing that you would know know about my mom, it is that she has an immense passion for cooking and for our Indian heritage. However, that pride is not exclusive to my mom and her business, but something that all owners of small Indian restaurants and grocery stores exhibit.

Whilst sitting at home, I started to think about these hard-working people and how I could help, even in a small way. I asked my mom if we could use her cooking platform to reach all of you and ask for your help in supporting these people.

Whilst I love my mom’s cooking, we always enjoy going out and getting food from our local Indian restaurant. I wanted to think of a way to assure restaurants are still around when the effects of the virus are over. My mom and I came up with a brilliant idea. However, we need your help if we are going to help support these business owners.

The plan:

We want to hear from YOU!  What is your favorite local Indian restaurant or grocery store? It can be from anywhere in the country, from Chicago, where we live, to King of Prussia, where my mom grew up and beyond!

Here's what you can do:

  1. Please contact the owner of that business and ask them if they would like to be interviewed by my mom on Facebook. We want to speak directly to the owner and we hope that they would be willing to spend a little bit of time telling us about their background. This is incredibly important because we want to hear from businesses that YOU love. They should be comfortable speaking on camera and they should be recommended by their favorite customer (YOU)!
  2. YOU encourage the business owner to connect with me and my mom via her email: anupysingla@indianasapplepie.com
  3. Once we are in contact, we will schedule a time to interview them via Facebook live so that everyone can learn more about their restaurant and the great food they provide.
  4. Through the interview, we aim to encourage people in the area and across the country to support the business in any way possible - whether it's by ordering out from them or even purchasing gift cards for friend and family who live in the area.

We hope to see you online!
