There's some things that stay with you forever - logically or illogically. One of the things that's clung to me all these years is something I read about esteemed Indian cook and food icon Madhur Jaffrey more than a decade ago. She was interviewed in a magazine article and told the reporter that whenever she traveled with her family for extended vacations, she always brought her spices along to be able to concoct her family's favorite dishes on the go. I don't think I realized how strongly I held onto that thought until I had the opportunity to interview Jaffrey...

Back-to-School Lunches

I became obsessed with my girls' lunch boxes at the end of last school year. It was June and I volunteered to be a room parent on Neha's kindergarten field trip to the Lincoln Park Zoo. Things were going great until we stopped for lunch.   The teacher sat all the kids down in a grassy area by the flamingos and asked everyone to pull out their lunches. Neha opened hers and instead of digging in like the other kids, buried her chin into her hands. She looked down and looked thoroughly dejected. "Neha. Why aren't you eating?" I asked....

My older daughter, Neha, is like a grumpy old man. She's always been like this - every since she was little. She gets up in the morning and there's always something to complain about. This summer the big thing was staying home. This past Saturday was no different. Sandeep and the girls made homemade muffins..they watched cartoons and we read the paper. Then it was time to do something outside, right? According to Neha, wrong. She sat in the top bunk of the girls' bed where I couldn't get to her and cried, "I told you I don't want to...

The last two days have been fairly typical of our crazy home and life...   As we speak, Sandeep is upstairs with the plunger in the girls' bathroom. Apparently Neha's last masterpiece was the last straw for our overworked toilet. It swelled to the point of overflowing but THANK THE LORD no water hit the ground. I put the lid down and ran downstairs as fast as I could. But not before checking on the four new additions to our family. Their names? Raju, Kaju (which means cashew in Hindi), Dadoo (which means frog), and Fluffy (who is the girls'...

Neha's fish Rana died today. It's about the 12th one that has perished in the tank of ... death. With this book on my plate and another Sun-Times piece to work on I'm so not interested in cleaning a fish tank in the 3-4 minutes I usually have to myself in a day. Unfortunately, Neha insisted through tears that we keep Rana downstairs in a cup. Inside the house so the rats don't get it in the middle of the night. So..I have a dead fish in a plastic cup sitting on my shoe rack right now waiting to be...

"So...If I eat this then do I get dessert?" asked Neha. "No. You have to eat everything. The rice - the yogurt AND the dal," I repeated. "Ohhhh. But I just took a taste of the dal and I don't like it," said Neha. "Right. But, I just heated up a second type of dal and I think you'll like that one." "I don't like that one either. So, if I eat just the rice and the yogurt can I have dessert?" Ahhhhhhhhhh....It's never ending. Trying to get Neha (6) to sit down and eat her meals. But, I'm determined....

Does anyone want two kids? Aged 4 and 6? Just kidding...but sometimes I wonder. We had a great breakfast out and then when Sandeep went to take them to the park so I could have an hour to myself - finally - to cook - what does Aria do? Throw one of the biggest tantrums of her toddler career. But...I persevered. I won. I got one over on HER. And she ended up helping me in the kitchen again, but of course AGAIN - I got half of what I wanted done - done. Here are the recipes I finished:REMEMBER...
