At once hearty and comforting, our Dal Makhani (black urad dal with red kidney beans) is cooked over a low flame for hours and then blended perfectly with fragrant spices, butter, and a touch of cream to make what has become a staple on Indian restaurant menus. It's the perfect vegetarian meal!
Garnish with sliced yellow onion and/or thinly sliced green chiles.
Whole black gram (urad dal), red kidney beans, tomatoo, onion, unsalted butter, fenugreek seeds, dried fenugreek leaves, bay leaves, black cardamom, green cardamom, ginger, garlic paste, paprika, garam masala. Basmati rice (water rice, corn oil, vinegar).

MICROWAVE (FROM FROZEN) Remove outside sleeve and peel back film at one corner for venting. Cook on HIGH for 4 minutes. Remove film, stir contents, and cook on HIGH for another 1-2 minutes. Let stand 1-2 minutes, stir, and serve.
CONVENTIONAL OVEN (FROM FROZEN) Preheat oven to 325°F. Remove outside sleeve and peel back film at one corner for venting. Place meal on an oven-safe tray and cook for 30 minutes, stir, and cook for an additional 20-25 minutes. Let stand 1 minute, stir, and serve.
STOVETOP Remove outer sleeve and thaw in refrigerator overnight. Remove film and empty contents to saucepan. Cover and warm over medium-high heat for 5-7 minutes until heated through.
